   Overview

Janis and Mark formed Salmon Forks Outfitters in 1986. They operate on a United States Forest Service Permit, in the Bob Marshall Wilderness. They own and train all of their mountain horses - they are all very gentle and very little horse experience is needed. Salmon Forks Outfitters/Montana offers scenic horseback roving pack trips, fly fishing, big game hunting, and complete tours through the Bob Marshall Wilderness.

Salmon Forks Outfitters/Montana will personally guide you on your trip through the BOB. They are located in Columbia Falls in Northwest Montana, and horseback pack trips take you into the heart of the Bob Marshall Wilderness, which puts you into some of the best, secluded fishing and fantastic scenery Montana has to offer. The Bob runs south along the western slope of the Rocky Mountains from Glacier National Park in the north to Lincoln, Montana in the south it contains over two million acres of rugged wilderness beauty that has never seen a road of any sorts. Salmon Forks Outfitters/Montana operates in the Bob Marshall on a US Forest Service permit that controls the number of people they take per trip and for the year. These trips are very limited so it is necessary to book a trip well in advance. This is why the fishing in the Bob is so good and continues to improve. Prime time to fish these waters is the middle of July through September. Many miles of river is available for you to fish and explore, and seldom will you see another person.

The South Fork of the Flathead, born in the nations most beautiful wilderness, “The Bob Marshall is best known for its pure wild native Westslope Cutthroat Trout”, “This river has never seen a hatchery raised fish”. The river is all native wild Westslope Cutthroat with the average size 14-18 inches and a few up to 22 inches. The Cutthroat feed mostly on insects and loves to rise to dry flies. The access to the river is unlimited; most fishermen walk out from camp and fish within two miles of camp. Sometimes Salmon Forks Outfitters/Montana will take you up river by horseback and you can spend the day fishing back to camp. Very seldom will you see other fishermen on the river, except those that are in camp with you. Big Salmon Lake is located just 1-1/2 miles from camp. Guests can spend a day fishing at the head of the lake where it is not uncommon to catch cutthroat in the 18-20 inch range. In September the "Bull trout” gather at the head of the lake to spawn. They are huge! Salmon Forks Outfitters/Montana also fishes a tributary of the Southfork called White River

Also available are daily scenic horseback rides from camp to the beautiful Chinese Wall on the continental divide of the Rockies, Historic Mud Lake fire lookout, Big Salmon Lake, Big Prairie Ranger Station, and many other small lakes and streams. Salmon Forks Outfitters/Montana also does what are called sightseeing roving trips, staying at several different campsites.

This is your vacation, no set rules … Salmon Forks Outfitters/Montana will do their best to accommodate what you would like to do... just ask!

Janis does all the cooking over a wood stove or the campfire outside. The meals are first class and served family style. You won't go hungry, there's something for every appetite!

Everything is furnished on these trips, just bring your fishing rod, sleeping bag, and personal belongings, and Salmon Forks Outfitters/Montana will take care of the rest. They will also do customized trips upon special request.
