Trip Itinerary
Day 1: Transfer In from Airport Calafate to the Estancia passing from the steppe to the foot of the Andes. The ride goes north right along the Cordillera showing you wild herds of guanaco’s and native birds of prey.
In the afternoon, you reach the Estancia where a nice tea is waiting. There is time to relax, acclimate and see San Martin Lake. After dinner, there is a briefing for the trip to come.
Day 2: After a hearty breakfast it is time to meet the horses. Pack all gear on the horses and set off west towards Chile. The ride goes alongside a huge lake with different bays overlooking the Andes all the way into the neighboring country. As you climb higher into the mountain the trail gets more exiting and you have a nice picnic under the ancient Lenga trees.
In the afternoon, you reach the old refuge where the history of Jimmy Rangoon starts, an Englishman running away from Chilean authorities who spent most of his life breeding cattle on this frontier.
Spend the night next to the fireplace in the refuge.
Day 3: Early in the morning, pack up and head down to the lake. Follow the coastline all the way back to the estancia, crossing various riverbeds that come down from the mountains. On the way, see horses running in the wild as well as a variety of birds that inhabit these Patagonian lands.
Back at the estancia a warm welcome awaits with a good hearty dinner.
Day 4: After a nice breakfast, transfer back to Calafate where you say goodbye.
Optional seven-day trip: The stay at the estancia can be extended with five days of horseback riding taking you all the way into the wild Cordillera. Please contact Gatomancha for more info.
