Day 1: Transfer from airport to San Carlos de Bariloche city. Lodging at the cozy three-star Hotel Huemul on the lake of Nahuel Huapi near the center of town. In the afternoon, there is meeting to give you all the necessary information about the trip. Day 2: Leaving the hotel early, drive one hour by vehicle along the beautiful Limay River towards the northeast of Bariloche where you will enter the enchanting valley of Cuyin Manzano (old Apple Valley). Here, horses are waiting. While they are being packed, enjoy a warm 'mate' (Argentinean tea) and have a chat with the local population.
Set off towards the west, following the Cuyin Manzano River upstream, passing by some old farms until you are in the middle of nowhere. Some years ago, a huge lake was formed on the river due to a landslide that has left a beautiful, big beach. Enjoy a nice lunch there before continuing on the path that will take you up the mountain to the small Lake Verde where you set up camp for the first night in the wilderness. Day 3: After a good, hearty breakfast, pack up camp and head further west towards the snowy Mt. Saiheque (2193 mts). You reach the snow and have a great view of the valley you traveled through. Contemplating this solitary altitude, you have a bite to eat.
Back on track a different path takes you into the Valley of Garcia. A charming little river flows through here and you set up camp on the riverbed for tonight. Day 4: Head south, climbing up to the hut of Pavon (1600 mts); an improvised shelter where Gatomancha already has camping gear. From here, go up to the top of Mt. Pavon where there is a marvelous view towards Lake Nahuel Huapi and the Andes going into Chile.
Going back down, pass through a thousand year old forest of Lenga, a special tree that grows at high altitudes. As this is a national park, you are very likely to spot some red deer and grey foxes on the way. Day 5: The silence of the high mountains let you awaken in peace. Packing up the horses, ride the edge of the mountain range, Cerro Colorado, towards the east. Lunch is served in the Mallin de Ovejas, a green grazing place for sheep. A good siesta will come in handy before setting off for Gutierrez River, from where you can see the famous Tronador glacier on clear days. Another improvised mountain hut gives you shelter for the night. Day 6: Packing up the horses, ride up the mountain to the Great Plane, giving you the feeling of riding in the sky. At the end of the plane, you get close to Torre Colorado, a unique geological rock formation. This is the resting place of many condors and they frequently fly around here, showing off their wingspan of up to three meters. It’s hard to leave this amazing place, but by dawn you should go down to the refuge Elise to warm up next to a sparkling fire. Day 7: Head back down to the valley, taking an easy pace. Passing by the littlePedregoso River, you reach an abandoned hut where it is said an inhabitant of over a 100 years used to live.
Reach base in the afternoon and have a nice time telling stories to the local family before heading back to Bariloche where city life awaits. The night is spent at the hotel. Day 8: After a good breakfast transfer to the airport. |
