Painted Pony Guest Ranch Costa Rica Sabaneros
Costa Rican cowboys are called Sabaneros or Vaqueros. These expert horsemen are an important part of Guanacaste life, from ranch hands working with cattle and horses, fiesta cowboys with their skillful roping in the bull ring, to skillful caballistas, or horsemen, riding their high stepping horses in the Tope horse parades. Our sabaneros will guide you on your rides, prepare your horses and demonstrate their horsemanship skills on their famous Criollo horses.
| Kay & Esteban - Your Hosts for Your Visit
With a blending of their American and Costa Rican cultures, Kay and Esteban, the owners and operators of Painted Pony Guest Ranch Costa Rica, will make your visit to their family owned ranch a memorable experience.
| Esteban & His Stallion, Squanto - Training with a Soft Touch
Rejecting traditional harsh training methods, Esteban trains Painted Pony Guest Ranch Costa Rica horses with a soft touch, adapting many of the Natural Horsemanship methods and common horse sense to training the Criollo horses. Foals born on the ranch are imprinted just after birth, and older horses, often trained by others, are re-schooled.
| Kay & Chicana - Riding for Life
Kay, an avid rider since childhood, moved to Costa Rica 14 years ago to live her dream of owning and raising horses, as well as working with tropical rainforest conservation. The combination of a love for horses and the environment is reflected in ranch environment. She comments that she came to paradise to raise “horses for my heart, and trees for my soul.”
| Our Horses
Our reputation is built on our noble Spanish horses, many of which were born and trained with natural horsemanship on the ranch. Our horses are selected for their comfort and character not only on trail rides, but also for fiestas and Tope horse parades.
