Overview
Backcountry Outfitters is a Utah-based business that was founded by Cody Clapp in 1999. It has been their goal to consistently provide a quality western experience for clients. The company is licensed and operates in Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Wyoming, and Kansas. Backcountry Outfitters specializes in horseback adventures, fishing, hunting, 4x4 tours, ATV rentals, mountain bike rentals, shuttles, hiking/canyoneering, and retail of backcountry supplies and equipment. Traditionally, horseback rides, hunting, and ATV rentals have been their strongest markets.
Since the first tour in 1999, BCO has strived to provide more than a tour – they provide a unique western experience that helps clients appreciate the horses and endears them to the lifestyle and the land. In 2006, BCO has seen a 35% plus repeat clientele and word of mouth has spread. Currently, BCO is known as “the place to ride in Utah” if you are looking for well-trained horses, great trails, knowledgeable guides, and an experience beyond your average trail ride.

On spring and fall trips, spend your time descending deep into the warm, red rock canyonlands of Capitol Reef National Park. Known for its “Sleeping Rainbow”, the colors and wonders of the area are beyond the imaginable. Inhabited by ancient Anasazi and Fremont Indian cultures thousands of years ago, the area holds a great deal of history. Torn away by eons of wind, water, and seismic movement, Capitol Reef National Park also holds secrets and stories of pre-history that guides are all well versed on.
During the heat of the summer months, ascend to the top of Boulder Mountain in Utah’s Dixie National Forest. Known as the tallest wooded plateau in North America, Boulder stands 11,000 feet tall at the top of its ancient caldera. Amazing as it sounds, this 30 mile long plateau if covered with spruce, pine, and Quaking Aspen all the way across the 11,000-foot elevation. BCO often finds cattle grazing up there throughout the summer. However, BCO utilizes Boulder for something much more special … the incredible, mind-blowing views of Capitol Reef, Canyonlands, and Escalante Grand Staircase. The views from the tops of this peak stretch past the Henry Mountains, all the way to Colorado! There truly is no other place like this one. You must see it for yourself.
BCO provides the appropriate meals on all trips that are a full day or longer. For example, full-day trips will include lunch on the trail. Overnight trips will include lunch and dinner the first day, and breakfast and lunch on the second day, etc. BCO provides homemade meals for all guests. They aim to please, so if you have allergies or specific dietary needs, you are urged to call with your requests. Meals at camp are primarily cooked within Dutch ovens. BCO can grill top sirloins, simmer pork roasts, and bake peach cobblers that will give you something to write home about. Backcountry Outfitters likes to think of themselves as “healthy eating cow-folk”, meaning they always include a meat, a starch, and a vegetable or salad. If you are a vegetarian, again, please give BCO fair warning! They will be happy to make the necessary food arrangements. Breakfasts are usually skillet style or continental, but it depends on how long your stay is. BCO tries to give you plenty of choices as your experience with them evolves. Guests are always encouraged to bring plenty of water and snacks for your saddlebags. If you are camping, you are welcome to bring your own alcoholic beverages.
Backcountry Outfitters currently has two locations in Torrey. The main headquarters and outdoor store are located at the intersection of Highway 24 and Highway 12, just next to the Chevron fueling station (677 E. Highway 24, Torrey, UT). BCO is open seven days a week, March through November. The other location is BCO’s stables. They are located just west of Torrey on Highway 24. If you are driving into Torrey from the west, you will pass a sign that says “Horseback Rides 435-425-2010”. If you are joining BCO for an hourly trail ride or half-day trip, you will probably meet BCO at this location. If you have horses of your own that you would like to bring to ride with BCO, no problem! Just call for booking and boarding prices.
Never hesitate to call or email with any questions you might have. Expert guides are always ready to serve you!
